Question 329016: You have been hired by a group of anthropologists to sort out the data that they collected from a trip to Ja-Ji, a remote island in the south Pacific. The people of Ja-Ji do not permit outsiders to count them directly; so, the anthropologists had to collect all sort of other data to get to the population. They fear that they may have missed something and your job is to make that assessment, or better yet, use what they have to get the population of Ja-Ji. This is what their notes say:
People in Ja-Ji are either single or in monogamous unions. 10% of the adult population of Ja-Ji is homosexual and they are all in long term relationships. These homosexual unions constitute one fifth of the unions in Ja-Ji. There are 1,000 children, which constitute half of the single population of Ja-Ji.

Question 329541: The sales representative informs you that there are 56 houses for sale with two floor plans still available. Use x to represent floor plan one and y to represent floor plan two. Write an equation that illustrates the situation.
x + y = 56
b. The sales representative later indicates that there are three times as many homes available with the second floor plan than the first. Write an equation that illustrates this situation. Use the same variables you used in Part a.
x + 3y = 56
c. Use the equations from Parts a. and b. of this exercise as a system of equations. Use substitution to determine how many of each type of floor plan is available. Describe the steps you used to solve the problem.
d. What are the intercepts of the equation from Part a. of this problem? What are the intercepts from Part b. of this problem? Where would the lines intersect if you solved the system by graphing?

Question 329801: Help please!
I tried to solve these but I'm not sure if its correct.
4x – 3y = 1
X = 1 – y
4/7 and y = 3/7
8 x – 6y = 0
X + y = 134
x = 39/28 and y = 13/7
I'm also having trouble solving these. Can you please help? (you can use any convenient method)
-3 - 7z = 27,
-6x + y - 5z = `45
4x + 4y - 6z =0
x + 4y + z = 11
3x + 4y = 7
5x + 2y + 2z =19
-5X +5y + z = 8
9x + 8y + 9z = 116
x + 2y + 9z = 86
Thank you in advance!

Question 330867: I'm some problems with my algebra lesson. It's systems of equations. I am suppose to figure out if the ordered pair of (8,-1) is a solution to the systems: 2x + 3y = 13 and x - y = 19. I know how to do this, just not with this problem. On the second equation I am confused as to what the x and the y are supposed to be, number wise. What do I do with the x and y when there is no other number?
