It takes 7 hrs for Mary to rake leaves by herself, but her brother Matt can work three times as fast. If they work together, how long will it take them to rake leaves. I have a chart to complete with rate, time and work done for each sibling. I have Mary: rate 1/7, time 7, work done, 1. Matt: rate 3/7, time 3, and /work done 1. together rate is 1/7 +3/7=4/7=7/4= 1.75 or 1 hour and 45 minutes. Thank you!

Question 1018528: Hi how can i solve this coconuts and Monkey problem?
1

Five sailors arrive at a deserted island that has only coconuts and one monkey. The sailors collect all the coconuts into one big pile and agree to divide up the coconuts into equal shares the next morning. However during the night each sailor wakes up one at a time afraid to trust the others and decides to take his share secretly. So each sailor takes 1/5 of the coconuts and hides it. Each time there is one coconut left over and the sailor gives that to the monkey. In the morning they divide what is left of the pile into equal shares and there is still one coconut left for the monkey..
How many were in original pile?
I know you need to use diophantine equation but other than that its really challenging for me..

Question 1019346: For my homework assignment, I had to do this problem:
You sold hats and t-shirts at a recent ball game. Hats sold for $10.50 each and t-shirts sold for $16.75 each. You sold a total of 35 items and earned $492.50. How many hats and how many t-shirts did you sell?
I tried to do this equation:
10.50x+16.75y=35
x + y= 492.50
I tried to solve the equation but when I canceled out the variable I subtract the 35 and 492.50 I couldn't solve the problem. I really have no clue how to solve this.
