Question 68860: A collection of quarters and dimes is worth $6.75. The number of dimes is 4 less than three times the number of quarters. How many of each are there?
I am confused as to how I would write this out, and solve it.

(10-(x)+10-(7))+ 20 = -5(2x + 4)
(-10x-10*7)+ 20 = -5 (2x + 4)
(-10x-70) + 20 = -5 (2x + 4)
-10x-70 + 20 = -5 (2x + 4)
-10x-50 = -5 (2x + 4)
-10x-50 = -5 (2x)-5*4
-10x-50 = -5*2x-20
-10x-50 = -10x-20
-50 = -20

I know this is not right because I ended up with two answers. Can you see where I went wrong and tell me how to get the right answer for this equation. Thanks.

Question 69283: I am having difficulty with this problem - please help me if you can. The chapter is Solving Linear Systems by Linear Combinations (substitution not allowed).
2q = 7 - 5p
4p - 16 = q
I am using the 5 step formula - arrange like terms in columns, obtain coefficients that are opposites for one variable, add equations & eliminate one variable & solve, etc... I did nine other problems this way and solved them. I don't see what I'm doing wrong with this one. Any help will be appreciated.

Please solve using 2 variables and 2 equations.
I tried these 2 equations, but I did not get the correct answers which I believe to be 180 and 80.
0.2x +0.3y = 60
0.25x+0.5y = 90
I may need an equation using "x+y" to tie it all together...Please help because this is driving me crazy!!!
