Difficult question to answer and depends on what you mean by solution.
x%5E2%2B1=0 has no solution over the real numbers but over the complex plane x=i and x=-i are both solutions.
So for polynomials, if the degree of the polynomial is n, there are n roots which may be real or complex.
For other equations, it depends on the type of equation.
Example,
sin%28theta%29=1.1 has no real solutions since the sine function has a maximum of 1.
2%5Ex=-1 also has no real solutions, again the complex plane offers solutions.
