Question 80921: Can you please help me with this question I am totally clueless as to how to answer this question the working that is.
Given a line containing the points (1,3) , (2,4) , (3,5) determine the slope- intercept form of the equation, give one additional point on this line and graph the function.

...Okay... This problem really means "How much is it to get to the next point from the other point". Do you know rise over run? If you don't know, you have to rise one and over two (2/1) to get to the next point from the previous point. Then, 2/1 simplifies to 2. Did I loose you yet? It's complicated. So the slope intercept is 2. Okay, graphing the next point is simple, start with the last point named (3,5) and then go up 1 over 2. (that's where the rise over run thing comes in)

The previous solution to this problem is 100% INCORRECT. The slope is NOT 2, and the equation of the line was never given.
Slope-intercept form of the line means y=mx%2Bb
where m means the slope and b means the y-intercept.
to find the slope, we will use 2 points and the slope formula:
m=%28y2-y1%29%2F%28x2-x1%29

Let's use the two points (1,3) and (2,4) in the slope formula to find the slope:
m=%284-3%29%2F%282-1%29
m=1%2F1=1

Now let's plug in what we know about the line:
y=1x%2Bb

Again, pick a point: how about (3,5)? and plug it in so that we can find b:
5=1%2A2%2Bb
5=3%2Bb
2=b

Now that we know what b is, let's finish writing the equation of the line:
y=1x%2B2
which is the same thing as saying
y=x%2B2

To find another point on the line, pick a new x value for a point, maybe 4, maybe 100. We could pick either. I'm going to use 4, though because it's smaller, and probably easier to use. (4,y) we still don't know the y. We will find it by plugging in 4 for x to our equation:
y=4%2B2
y=6

so the point (4,6) is on the line.
