Going up by 25% means the coat sold for

+300%2A%28+1+%2B+.25+%29+
+1.25%2A300+=+375+

25% off this price is:
+375+-+.25%2A375+
+375%2A%28+1+-+.25+%29+
+.75%2A375+=+281.25+
The final price is $281.25
Gaining 25% and then losing 25% did
not result in going back to the
$300 original price

$300×1.25=$375 $375×.75=$281.25
For a cost increase of 25% you multiply the original value as shown. (300×1)=300+(300×.25)=300+75=375
375@25% off=375×.75 which =281.25
Am not sure of the question of anything expected or otherwise.
