Can I please get help on this question? Lin paid 42 cents for a pencil and two erasers. Kim paid 91 cents for five pencils and three erasers? What were the prices of pencils and erasers?

Let price of each pencil and each eraser be P, and E. respectively

Then: P + 2E = 42 ----- P = 42 - 2E ----- eq (i)
Also, 5P + 3E = 91 ------ eq (ii)

5(42 - 2E) + 3E = 91 ----- Substituting 42 - 2E for P in eq (ii)

210 - 10E + 3E = 91

-10E + 3E = 91 - 210

- 7E = - 119

E, or price of each eraser = %28-+119%29%2F-+7, or highlight_green%2817%29 cents

P = 42 - 2(17) ----- Substituting 17 for E in eq (i)

P = 42 - 34

P, or price of each pencil = highlight_green%288%29 cents

You can do the check!!
