Question 681697: I am having difficulty setting up this problem. I have to solve by using a system of equations.
On the first day of school, the percentage of boys in a particular class is 60%. During the school year, six girls move away, and are replaced in the class by six boys; this makes the class roster 75% boys. Find the number of boys and girls in the class on the first day of school. Answer by ReadingBoosters(3246) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! x is the entire class
b = .60x
The moving away of 6 girls and adding of 6 boys does not change x
...
however,
b+6 = .75x
...
Substitution
.60x + 6 = .75x
6 = .75x - .60x
6 = .15x
x = 40 in the class
.60(40) = boys
40 - 24 = girls
