This is an example of a linear equation : 2x + 4 = 10
2x + 4 = 10
The goal is to find what X is equal to, your final answer is X = (answer)
The first step in solving this equation is to subtract 4 from both sides. (Remember that what you do to one side you must do to both sides).
2x + 4 - 4 = 10 - 4
2x = 6
Now you just need to divide both sides by 2, and you will get the final answer:
x = 3
Let's do another one.

+x%2F3+-+12+%2B+12+=+36+%2B+12+
+x%2F3+=+48+
+x+=+16+
Do you see that? You need to do the opposite operation (subtracting and adding are opposite, division and multiplication are opposite) to both sides. So when you see x - 1 = 12, you know to add 1 to 12 to get 13, and to cancel out the x + 1 to get simply x. x = 13.
