Question 474504: I tried solving this system of equations, but my answer seems totally off. If someone could please show me where I went wrong, I'd appreciate it!
Solve the system of equations using the elimination method.
4x+3y=3
5x-9y=144
I multiplied the second equation by 3 to eliminate the y variable. After adding the two equations and solving for x, I got 10 1/17.

Then I substituted my x-value into the original first equation to solve for y.
Thus, my answer was (171/17, -211/17) Answer by mananth(16946) (Show Source):
multiply (1)by 3
Multiply (2) by 1
12 x + 9 y = 9
5 x + -9 y = 144
Add the two equations
17 x = 153
/ 17
x = 9
plug value of x in (1)
4 x + 3 y = 3
36 + 3 y = 3
3 y = 3 -36
3 y = -33
y = -11
