You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Joe orders an 8 ounce martini that is 4.7% vermouth.
sue orders an 8 ounce martini that is 100% gin.
a martini is made with gin and vermouth.
Joe and Sue give the drinks to Jane.
Jane would like to mix a portion of each drink, so that she has an 8 ounce martini that is 99.8% gin.
How much does Jane use of each drink?
:
Let x = amt of Sue's drink which is pure gin
then
(8-x) = amt of Joe's drink which is 4.7% vermouth
Change Joes drink to per cent gin:
100 - 4.7 = 95.3% gin
:
Write a decimal equiv of per cent gin equation
Sues + Joes = Jane's
x + .953(8-x) = .998(8)
x + 7.624 - .953x = 7.984
x - .953x = 7.984 - 7.624
.047x = .36
x = .36%2F.047
x = 7.66 oz of pure gin from Sue's drink
then
8 - 7.66 = .34 oz of Joe's drink
