Question 387261: Is the relationship below linear? Tell how you decided. Write an equation for the linear relationship.
x 5 10 15 20 25 30
y 20 30 40 50 50 50
I am completely lost. I tried understanding what my chapter was saying but it is only confusing me more.
Am I even on the right track?
x/y 5/20 10/30 15/40 20/50 25/50 30/50
x/y .25 .333 .375 .4 .5 .6 Answer by robertb(5830) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! If we use the first pair of data to get the slope of the line passing through them, then we would get . If we use the first pair of x,y data, the point-slope form of the line would be y - 20= = 2(x-5), or y = 2x + 10, after simplifying. Our linear equation would describe the first 4 pairs of data, but not the 5th and the 6th pairs. Therefore the relationship is NOT linear.
