Question 373011: Solve using the substitution method. Show your work. If the system has no solution or an infinite number of solutions, state this.
-x + 6y = 54
3x + y = 9
Can someone please help me? I am completely lost and am working toward a huge deadline!

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
3x+%2B+y+=+9 Start with the second equation.

y+=+9-3x Subtract 3x from both sides.

-x+%2B+6y+=+54 Go back to the first equation.

-x+%2B+6%289-3x%29+=+54 Plug in y+=+9-3x

-x%2B54-18x=54 Distribute.

-19x%2B54=54 Combine like terms on the left side.

-19x=54-54 Subtract 54 from both sides.

-19x=0 Combine like terms on the right side.

x=%280%29%2F%28-19%29 Divide both sides by -19 to isolate x.

x=0 Reduce.

y+=+9-3x Go back to the previously isolated equation.

y+=+9-3%280%29 Plug in x=0

y+=+9-0 Multiply

y=9 Subtract.

So the solutions are x=0 and y=9 which form the ordered pair (0,9)

So this means that the system is consistent and independent.
