Question 338878: I have been out of schol for too long. I have the word problem: The greater of two numbers is five less than twice the lesser number. The sum of two numbers is 28.
this is as far as I got
x+y=28

2x-5=y

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
x%2By=28 Start with the first equation.

x%2Bhighlight%28%282x-5%29%29=28 Plug in y=2x-5 into the second equation. In other words, replace each y with 2x-5. Notice we've eliminated the y variables. So we now have a simple equation with one unknown.

3x-5=28 Combine like terms on the left side

3x=28%2B5Add 5 to both sides

3x=33 Combine like terms on the right side

x=%2833%29%2F%283%29 Divide both sides by 3 to isolate x

x=11 Divide

Since we know that x=11 we can plug it into the equation y=2x-5 (remember we previously solved for y in the first equation).

y=2x-5 Move onto the second equation.

y=2%2811%29-5 Plug in x=11

y=22-5 Multiply

y=17 Combine like terms

So the solutions are x=11 and y=17

This means that the two numbers are 11 and 17
