Not sure if I am doing this correctly:
8%28y%2B3%29=3%282y%2B12%29
8y%2B24=6y%2B36

That is good, you used the distributive principle

cross%282y%2B24=12%29

That is wrong because when you add -24 to both sides you 
no longer have the +24 on the left, but only

2y+=+12

Then you divide both sides by 2 and get

y=6

You're good up to the third step.
8(y+3)=3(2y+12)
8y+24=6y+36
2y+24=12 This step you forgot to subtract 24 on the left side. ( Remember, whatever you do on one side we need to do on the other side)
2y=12 Divide both sides by 2 to get:
y=6
Plug in the answer to see if it works.
