Question 203743: what is the reason to use mathematical elimination rather than graphing to find the point of intersection of two lines?
Answer by jsmallt9(3758) (Show Source):
You can put this solution on YOUR website! There is no one reason for this. There are many reasons that graphing is not the best way to solve a system:- You need graph paper.
- You need to be able to graph accurately.
- The point of intersection needs to be visible on the graph, which can be difficult if the solution is something like (-2000, 6724).
- You need to be able to find the coordinates of the point of intersection on the graph which can be extremely difficult, if not impossible, if the solution is something like: (0.403, -2.75).
There are so many weaknesses in the graphing technique that the only reasons I teach it are:- I'm required to.
- It gives a visual explanation of what you are finding using the other techniques.
