This can also be factored as f(x)=(x+1)^2.
Moreover, the vertex is at (-1,0), y intercept at f(0)=1.
The slope will be f'(x)=2x+2=2(x+1). Thus, the slope is negative until -1 and positive after -1. The further away you go from -1 in either direction, the faster the function will be growing.
