Question 557493: 3x-y=11
2x+5y=13

You can put this solution on YOUR website! We want to get the coefficient (the number in front of a variable) of one of the variables the same. To do that we can multiply the first equation by 5 to make the y coefficient the same (well one is negative and one is positive, but that'll work for us)
5(3x-y)=5(11)
15x-5y=55
Now take the old equation
2x+5y=13
And add them together
17x=68
divide both sides by 17
x=4
sub in for for x
3(4)-y=11
12-y=11
-y=-1
y=1
