Using a table is appropriate if you know a function is linear (so you can plot two or more points and connect them). With other functions you might need more points. The x- and y-intercepts method works as well, and is another case of a table. I don't know what you mean by "graphing using a linear equation" but the other method (which works best for me) is to write it in the form y = mx + b. The y-intercept is (0,b) and then I draw a line through that point with slope m.
