cm are a tiny measure, so there are a great many
of them in a km
In terms of units:
[ 1 km ] x [ 100 m / km ] x [ 100 cm / m ] = [ 10000 cm ]
Notice the cancellations so you end up with cm

Include the units in conversions, and you will get it right.

1 meter = 100 cms

d kms = d km* 1000 m/km * 100 cm/m
= d*100000 cm

Notice that the units cancel, leaving cms.
