Start with the general quadratic equation:

 Ax² + Bx + C = 0

Subtract C from both sides

     Ax² + Bx = -C

Divide through by A

    A%2FAx² + B%2FAx = -C%2FA

Simplify:

     x² + B%2FAx = -C%2FA

                                   Multiply the coefficient of x by 1%2F2:  expr%28B%2FA%29%2Aexpr%281%2F2%29 = B%2F%282A%29
                                   Square B%2F%282A%29.  %28B%2F%282A%29%29%5E2 = B%5E2%2F%284A%5E2%29
                                   Add B%5E2%2F%284A%5E2%29 to both sides:

x² + B%2FAx + B%5E2%2F%284A%5E2%29 = B%5E2%2F%284A%5E2%29 - C%2FA

Factor the left side and get LCD of 4A² on the right

(x + B%2F%282A%29)(x + B%2F%282A%29) = B%5E2%2F%284A%5E2%29 - C%2FA%28%284A%29%2F%284A%29%29%29

Write left side as the square of a binomial.  Multiply fractions on far right

Combine fractions on the right over the LCD

Use the principle of square roots:
