(4x10^3)*(3x10^2) = 12x10^5 which is re-written as 1.2x10^6.

This is shorthand for the full sum: 4000x300. By looking at it, we can say 4x3 is 12 and then 5 zeroes --> 1200000, which is 1,200,000 which is 1.2x10^6.

In exp form, add together the powers.
