First bar changes the sign of the term bi to opposite,

transforming  a+bi  to  a-bi.



Second bar changes the sign of the term (-bi) to opposite,

transforming  a-bi  to a - (-bi) = a+bi.



Thus doubled bar returns  a+bi  to its original form.
