Question 1113135: can someone help please? Convert the point (-6,-6) from rectangular form to polar form. Thank you. Answer by Theo(13342) (Show Source):
your coordinates in polar form are (r, theta), where r is the length of the hypotenuse of the right triangle formed and theta is the angle formed by r and the x-coordinate.
if you draw your coordinate point, it will look like this:
AC is the hypotenuse of the triangle formed.
the triangle formed is either ABC or ADC.
the angle we are looking for is the angle between AC and the x-coordinate.
that would be angle BAC.
since the length of AB and the length of BC are the same, you have an isosceles right triangle.
that makes angle BAC = 45 degrees.
45 degrees is the reference angle of an angle in the third quadrant.
the angle in the third quadrant formed by the reference angle of 45 degrees is equal to 180 + 45 = 225 degrees.
