Question 295391: I understand the absolute-value notation are in bars, not parentheses or brackets. I also understand if there is a negative number in the bars, the absolute value becomes a positive number......
the question is:
The absolute value of negative seven is less than or equal to seven.
choices:
a. | –7 | = 7
b. | –7 | < 7
c. | –7 | ≤ 7
d. | –7 | ≥ 7
I choose a and so did the teacher. Other students questioned her about it and now she is saying a is the wrong answer.
I choose a because the question asked the absolute value of -7, | –7 | is less than or = to 7. Since the absolute value of -7 is 7 it cannot be less than...because they are equal.
this is how I understand...please correct me if i'm wrong.
if a isn't the correct answer, then none of the choices she gave would be right.
b. | –7 | < 7 ~ the absolute value of -7 is 7 . 7 cant be less than 7 because 7=7
c. | –7 | ≤ 7 ~ the absolute value of -7 is 7. 7 does = 7 but is it not less than 7
d. | –7 | ≥ 7 ~ the absolute value of -7 is 7. 7 does = 7 but is it not greater than 7
THANKS!!

Question 304584: Okay, I am in the 6th grade && i'm learning absolute value. On your sight it kind of made me think that you were saying that a negitive number would be positive - witch is right, but then it said something like a positive number would alway's be negitive. I talked to my math teacher about this && he said that the information you posted was wrong. You made it seem more like you were talking about how to slove the positive/negitive number line thing. && I might be wrong about this, but can you please just reveiw what you wrote because If it is wrong alot of other kid's could be following what you wrote. Well that's pretty much it. Please email me regarding this qustion/statement. Thank you for takeing the time to read this.
