5%2F4 is a fraction, but it means "one and one quarter"; or 1%261%2F4, which is a number a little bigger than 1 but much less than 2.

"Absolute Value", means "distance from zero on a number line". When you first use a number line, you would usually be in grade 1, and your number line would start at zero, and have whole numbers shown and labeled on the right-side. A little later, not sure if grade 6, but certainly after grade 6, you learn that the number line also has numbers to the left of the zero, which are now known as the NEGATIVE numbers. Toward the right of zero are the POSITIVE numbers.
