When you write |a-b| you mean "the distance from a to b on a number line"
That distance is always a positive number.
----
|-5| means |-5-0| which is the distance from -5 to 0 which is 5
---------------------------------------
|2+8| = |2-(-8)| is the distance from 2 to -8 which is 10
