subtract 1 from both sides to get:

2x < 4

divide both sides by 2 to get:

x < 2

your graph would be a vertical line at x = 2 with a shaded area to the left of it.

this implies that any value of x < 2 is valid.

y can be any value as long as the value of x is < 2

that's why the whole area would be shaded.
