Question 109817: here is the problem: Evaluate each of the expressions if: a=-2, b=5, c=-4 and d=6. Now here is the equation: 4b + 5d - c/a
What I have so far is this; 4(5) + 5(6) - -4/-2
from here I am not sure what to do or if what I have here is right, I would very much appreciate your help on this.
Thank You, Barb Neely

You can put this solution on YOUR website! You are right on ...
.
I might have written it with some parentheses around that last term ... like this:
.
4(5) + 5(6) - (-4/-2)
.
just to help keep the signs straight, but there is nothing wrong with the way you did it.
.
Now you can just start simplifying ... term by term. Multiply the 4 times the 5 and you get:
.
20 + 5(6) - (-4/-2)
.
Then multiply the 5 times the 6:
.
20 + 30 - (-4/-2)
.
Next divide the terms in the parentheses. -4 divided by -2 is +2 and you have:
.
20 + 30 - (+2)
.
When you remove parentheses preceded by a minus sign, you change the signs of the terms
inside the parentheses. So - (+2) becomes -2 when the parentheses are taken out and the
expression becomes:
.
20 + 30 - 2
.
Now add the three terms and the result is +48
.
Hope this clarifies the problem for you. Good job ...
