by definition |a| = a if a is positive and |a| = -a if a is negative.
if you let a = -7, then you get:
|-7| = -(-7) which is equal to 7.
the absolute value of a number is always positive.
if the number is already positive, then leave it as is.
if the number is negative than just change the sign to make it positive.
in other words, you are correct.
