Depends. Must the shape be solid or just a single layer of little cubes on each face of your shape?

My calculator said it, I believe it, that settles it

Are these rectangular dimensions, for a rectangular shape?
If that then 40%2A60%2A40=theNumberOfCubes.

The dimension unit was given as "little cubes".

a litle cube is 1 by 1 by 1
to make a shape that is 40 by 60 by 40, you will require 40 * 60 * 40 = 96000 little cubes.

the volume of a little cube that is 1 inch by 1 inch by 1 inch is 1 * 1 * 1 = 1 cubic inch.

the volume of a container that is 40 inches by 60 inches by 40 inches is 40 * 60 * 40 = 96000 cubic inches.

since that little cube is 1 cubic inch, then 96000 of them will fit into the volume of the container.

to see this visually, consider a much cmaller container, like a container that is 2 inches by 2 inches by 1 inch.

that container should contain 2 * 2 * 1 = 4 cubic inches, which means it can be composed of 4 little cubes with a colume of 1 cubic inch each.

my picture of that container looks like this.

.
As I understand the problem, you need 12 identical little cubes with the side length of 20 units each.
