The polar coordinates are r the distance to the origin and theta, the angle the positive x-axis would have to sweep to get to the point.
Maybe you should try the mathisfun website. It explains it with bright colors, and I am only typing text in black and white.
The distance from the point (1,-1) to (0,0) is
sqrt%282%29 and the angle theta is
-45 degrees or -pi%2F4
if your course uses -180 to 180 degrees for theta, or
315 degrees or 7pi%2F4 if the convention is 0 to 180 degrees or 0 to pi%29
