Problem:
The base of a triangle is 3cm greater than the height. The
area is 14 cm^2. Find the height and the length of the base.
I know that I have a consecutive number - (n+3) and I know I have
to apply a formula A= 1/2(b)(h) or is it the A=l(w). I tried it
using both, and still am not doing it right...I also know that I have
to do factoring in there, once I get my equation right. Than do
the whole take it zero thing. So I know the steps but not getting
them in order properly....Thanks so much!!!

Question 93150: Problem:
One leg of a right triangle has a length of 3m. The other sides have lengths that are consecutive integers. Find these lenths.
The other leg is ____ m
The length of the hypotenuses is ____m
I get the consecutive inegers n, n+1
and if I use the formula a^2 + b^2 = c^2 - I don't know what
to plug in for c. I've been shown several ways, and now
I'm just confused.

Question 93794: I have a square, divided up into 4 quadrants and need to know which quadrant a point lies in. I know the length of all 3 sides of the triangle (the edge of the square is 90', and the other two sides are lengths from 2 adjacent corners to the point, e.g. 48' and 63'). How do I best figure the angles of the triangle in order to calculate where the point lies, or is there another way to do this?

Question 95181: Hello, I managed to find the solution to this question through trial and error, but I am very curious to see how it is properly solved.
This is from my Precalculus book published by brooks/cole. (Precalculus Mathematics for Calculus Fifth Edition by Stewart Redlin and Watson)
" 78. Dimensions of a Lot A city lot has the shape of a right triangle whose hypotenuse is 7 ft longer than one of the other sides. The perimeter of the lot is 392 ft. How long is each side of the lot? "
After hours of attempts and searching for clues I found a web site that let me plot the two sides and gave me the length of the hypotenuse. I finally came up with this: one side 49 ft, the other side 168 ft, and the hypotenuse 175 ft. 175+168+49=392 175-168=7

Question 95818: The Radius of the Earth is 3960 miles and 1 mile = 5280 feet. The deck of a ship is 100 feet above sea level. How far can you see from the deck?
I am not sure where to start. We were working with right triangles in my trigonometry class... I just am not sure how to solve this at all. Thanks for the help.

The diagonal brace on a rectangular gate forms an angle with the horizontal side with degree x and an angle with the vertical side with degree measure 2x – 3. Find x.
x + (2x – 3) =180
3x – 3 = 180
3x = 177
x = 59
Answer: x = 59
Check : 1 angle is 59, 2nd angle is 115, which leaves 6 degrees for the third
