Question 309694: Regarding a triangle which has a 90 degree angle...is there a simple formula to take a given diagonal dimension (hypotenuse) and a constant vertical / horizontal dimension relationship (16:9), and determine the vertical / horizontal dimensions from a given diagonal dimension. For example, if I use the basic 16 horizontal dimension, and the basic 9 vertical dimension, the hypotenuse will be 18.357...
Hence, working in reverse, what would be the formula I could use to plug in a given hypotenuse (20, 22, 23, 24, 25, 50, 100, etc. and using the non variable 16:9 ratio, come up with the vertical and horizontal dimensions?
I hope I did OK with making my question clear.
Thanks.

Question 310356: The email given earlier is not correct :( I am sorry here is the right one.
You are given an exteded ratio that compares the lengths of the sides of the triangle. find the lengths of all unknown sides.
DE:EF:DF is 4:5:6 DE=16 EF=y DF=y+4
I tried 4(16)+ 5(y) + 6(y+4) but the answer in the back of the book isn't the same answer I get. I have had no instruction in Geometry since the beginning of April as I haven't been going to regular school. I have been in a homebound program and never got anything with Geometry until now. I hope you can help me. I have a final to take and I haven't done anything in any chapters past 4.
