In a right triangle, a%5E2+b%5E2=c%5E2 where a and b are the legs and c is the hypotenuse.

3^2 + 6^2 = x^2
9 + 36 = x^2
45 = x^2
Take the square root of each side to get
6.7082 = x (or "the square root of 45")

For the second equation, a rectangle is simply two right triangles together. Same formula.
