Question 805533: I got this homework last week and there is one question that I can't make sense out of? Wondering if you can help me :)
A triangle has a height 1cm less than the base. If it's area is 45cm2, find the dimensions of the rectangle?
Where did we get a rectangle from?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
Height and base suggests a triangle. If h is height and b is base, then the description means, h=b-1.

You were next, given area 45 cm%5E2.
If this should be a triangle, then we use area is %281%2F2%29b%2Ah.
%281%2F2%29b%28b-1%29=45
This is assuming the author intended, "triangle".
b%28b-1%29=%282%2F1%2945
b%5E2-b=90
b%5E2-b-90=0 which is factorable.
%28b%2B9%29%28b-10%29=0 SOLVABLE.

The meaningful answer is highlight%28b=10%29
This then means height is h=b-1=10-1=highlight%28h=9%29.
