Question 725887: in a right triangle, the altitude to the hypotenuse is 5 units and the longer segment of the hypotenuse is 7 units. What is the nearest length of the hypotenuse to the nearest tenth?

You can put this solution on YOUR website!

The altitude to the base of a right triangle divides
the right triangle into two smaller triangles which are
similar to each other and to the whole given triangle.

Also the altitude to the base of a right triangle
is a mean proportion between the two segments it divides
the hypotenuse into.

Therefore,

                   x%2F5%22%22=%22%225%2F7
                  7x%22%22=%22%2225
                   x%22%22=%22%2225%2F7

Hypotenuse = x+%2B+7%22%22=%22%2225%2F7%22%22%2B%22%227%2F1 = 25%2F7%22%22%2B%22%2249%2F7%22%22=%22%2274%2F7%22%22=%22%2210.6
