Remember that opposite angles are always equivalent, and adjacent angles always add up to 180 degrees.
So, we know that an angle opposite to an angle with a measure of 42 *also* has a measure of 42.
If this opposite angle of 42 degrees is equal to 3x+3, then we can write the equation:
3x+3=42
Now, we just have to solve it. First, let's subtract 3 from both sides:
3x=39
Then, let's divide both sides by 3:
3x/3 = 39/3
x=13
So, it looks like x is equal to 13 degrees. Let's check this with the other piece of information we were given. If the angle of 4x is next to an angle with 42 degrees, then we know that the value of 4x is equal to 180 degrees minus 42 degrees. So:
4x=180-42
We perform the subtraction:
4x=138
Finally, we divide both sides by 4:
x=34.5
Unfortunately, the two values of 13 and 34.5 obviously are inconsistent. However, both are correct by their own equations.
