Question 383271: The following is known about three numbers:If the second number is subtracted from the sum of the first number and 4 times the third number, the result is 9. The third number plus 5 times the first number is 1. The first number plus 3 times the second number plus the third number is -14. Find all three numbers.
(Let x represent the first number,y the second number, and z the third number. Use the given conditions to solve a system of equations.)

Question 384101: I am having a real hard time with word problems, I have tried this one several times and this doesn;t make sense.
A. The sales representative informs you that there are 56 houses for sale with two floor plans still available. Use x to represent floor plan on and y to represent floor plan two. Write an equation that illustrates the situation.
B. The sales representative later indicates that there are three times as many homes available with the second floor plan than the first. Write an equation that illustrates this situation. Use the same varables you used in part A.

Question 384102: I have a hard time with word problems and I can't seem to get the 2 equations right to do the elimination. can you help by doing the steps so I can understand how it is done.
A. The sales representative here tells you they also have two floor plans available, but they only have 38 homes still for sale. Write an equation that illustrates the situation. Use x and y to denote floor plan one and floor plan two repectively.
B. The representative tells you that floor plan one sells for $175,000, and floor plan two sells for $200,000. She also mentions that all the available houses combined are worth $$7,200,000. Write an equation that illustrates this situation. Use the same variables you used in Part a

Question 385265: In 1998, the womens world record for the 100-meter free-style in swimming was 54.73 seconds. The records time has been decreasing by approximately 0.33 seconds a year. The men's record was 49.36 seconds and has been decreasing at about 0.18 seconds a year. Question 385638: This is a percents system of equations word problem. Please help me solve it.
A chemistry student needs 40 milliliters (mL) of a 14% acid solution. She had two acid solutions, A and B, to mix together to form the 40 mL acid solution. Acid solution A is 10% and acid solution B is 20% acid. How much of each solution should be used?
I have created one equation: x + y = 40
The second equation I have written is not finished:
.1x + .2y = ????
How do I finish the second equation? And why?

Question 389508: I need to solve for a system of three variables, and this is the first time I've ever came across this so I don't really know if I'm doing this right...
So here is the system:
2x - y + 3z = 8
x - 6y - z = 0
-6x + 3y - 9z = 24
I decided to get x taken care of first so I took the middle equation and it made x = 6y + z
And then I took x and plugged it in to the top equation so it would be 2(6y+z) - y + 3z = 8 and then it went to 12y + 2z - y + 3z = 8 and then 11y + 5z = 8 and then I got y = 5/11z +8/11
Then to get z I went ahead and plugged in x and y into the third equation, (which is where I think I made the wrong move...) then I got -36y - 6z + 15/11z + 24/11 - 9z = 24
Added like terms, and then that's where I got stumped. -6z + 15/11z is 9/11z, and then when you add the -9z it makes 0/11z? and if I actually did solve for z I really wouldn't get the first solution...
Can someone please help me point out where I went wrong and help me through this problem??? Thanks!
