He examined 4 times as many dogs as cats.
So the number of dogs is 4 times the number of cats.
d+=+4c

And, dogs and cats TOGETHER added up to 15.
So:
d+%2B+c+=+15
But we know that dogs outnumber cats by 4 times, so:
4c+%2B+c+=+15
Now we can easilly figure out the number of cats.
Add the c variables:
5c+=+15

c+=+15%2F5+=+3

He examined 3 cats.

Since he examined 4 times more dogs than cats, we know right away that he examined 3*4 = 12 dogs.
Check in your head: the number of dogs and cats should be 15 together.
12 + 3 = 15.
