SOLUTION: My instructions are simply to "solve" the equation is 3x-(5-4x)=2(4x+2)+1 I've tried doing it and I stopped once I got -5=x+6 it didn't seem right, so I didn't finish it.

+3x+-+5+%2B+4x+=+8x+%2B+4+%2B+1+
+7x+-+5+=+8x+%2B+5+
Now subtract 7x from both sides
+-5+=+x+%2B+5+
Subtract 5 from both sides. This is the same
as adding a -5 to both sides
+-10+=+x+ answer
You can do a check by plugging this back
into original equation:
+3x-%285-4x%29=2%284x%2B2%29%2B1+
+3%2A%28-10%29+-+%285-4%2A%28-10%29%29=2%284%2A%28-10%29%2B2%29%2B1+
Now work from the inside of the parentheses outward
