Let x = the 3rd side
then
(x+3) = one side
and
(x+3) = another side
:
x + 2(x+3) = 30
x + 2x + 6 = 30
3x = 36 - 6
3x = 24
x = 
x = 8 inches, the 3rd side, 11 inches are the other sides

Simplify, divide the equation by 10000:

If you added 100 gal, that means you used 100 gal and traveled: 100 * 5 mpg = 500 mi
It says you are 300 mi from your destination, therefore trip = 500 + 300 = 800mi
