Question 153466: #1Two sides of a triangle are 3 inches longer than the third side. If the perimeter of the triangle is 30 inches, what are the lengths of the sides?
#2Your business has $1,000,000 dollars in the bank. Your payroll is $50,000 per month, your overhead costs are $30,000 per month and your cost for producing goods is $70,000 per month. If your sales are only $100,000 per month, how many months will it take for you to file for bankruptcy if you cannot increase sales?
#3 You are driving a delivery van on a cross-country trip. You know that your truck gets about 5 miles per gallon of fuel and that you started with a full tank of gas (200 gallons). You have already traveled for a while when you stop for dinner. You top off the gas tank while you are stopped and pay for 100 gallons of fuel. If your ultimate destination is 300 miles from where you are now, how far will you be from your original starting point?
I dont know why but word problems are always a problem for me

You can put this solution on YOUR website!
#1Two sides of a triangle are 3 inches longer than the third side. If the perimeter of the triangle is 30 inches, what are the lengths of the sides?
:
Let x = the 3rd side
then
(x+3) = one side
and
(x+3) = another side
:
x + 2(x+3) = 30
x + 2x + 6 = 30
3x = 36 - 6
3x = 24
x = 24%2F3
x = 8 inches, the 3rd side, 11 inches are the other sides

If your sales are only $100,000 per month, how many months will it take for you to file for bankruptcy if you cannot increase sales?
:
let x = no. of months to bankruptcy (0)
:
Bank$ - payroll - overhead - cost + sales = bankrupt
:
1000000 - 50000x - 30000x - 70000x + 100000x = 0
Simplify, divide the equation by 10000:
100 - 5x - 3x - 7x + 10x = 0
;
100 - 5x = 0
:
100 = 5x
x = 100%2F5
x = 20 months

:
If you added 100 gal, that means you used 100 gal and traveled: 100 * 5 mpg = 500 mi
It says you are 300 mi from your destination, therefore trip = 500 + 300 = 800mi
