Question 1055210: Find the value of x, correct to 1 decimal place, in this diagram if the area is to be 20 square units.
Diagram: http://imgur.com/a/d2Kdt
Here is my working, the answer I got is different from the answer in the book which is 1.6
x(x+10)+ 1/2(pi x^2) =20
x^2 +10x + 1/2(pi x^2)= 20
2x^2+20x+pi x^2=40
(2+pi)x^2+20x-40=0
since x>0, x=1.455

Question 1055913: A net of a solid shape. The two circular faces are congruent and each has a diameter of 7cm nd a height of 25cm
A) Which solid shape can be formed from this net?
B) Calculate :1) The total surface area
2)The volume of this solid shape formed
C) If this solid shape is hollowed but left closed on one end of the circular faces which of these aspects between surface are and volume will be affected?

Question 1057369: A circular swimming pool has diameter 50 feet and is centered in a fenced-in square region measuring 80 feet by 80 feet. A concrete sidewalk 5 feet wide encircles the pool, and the rest of the region is grass, as shown in the figure below. (I added a link to the picture used in the problem. https://www.dropbox.com/s/jxc7syj05xb0lrh/8-1-023.gif?dl=0 )
Find the surface area of the water
Find the area of the concrete sidewalk
Find the area of the grass
Some of these I believe I can solve (sidewalk and grass area), but the surface area is something I have not done in about 15 years, and I am very rusty with it.

Question 1057394: The perimeter of a square window is 18 feet 4 inches.
(a) Find the area of the window in square inches.
(b) Find the area of the window in square feet. (Round your answer to one decimal place.)
I cannot understand how to convert the ft and inches part into plain inches I can use to solve the problem in each section it is asking for. Someone told me I needed to divide the 4ft into thirds, but I don't think I am doing it correctly.

Question 1057484: An oval athletic field is the union of a square and semicircles at opposite ends, as shown in the figure below (http://www.webassign.net/jmodd7/8-1-034.gif). If the total area of the field is 1,300 square yards, find the dimensions of the square.
So I know that we have to separate the shapes, and assemble the circles. I let S equal the sides of the square, and s also represents the radius, which is half the diameter.
We are given the area, which is 1300. What I don't understand is how to incorporate this into the problem to get the answer. I was provided with a formula, but am not sure how to solve for x.
A=s^2+3.14*(s/2)^2+s^2+(1+3.14/4)
