Height is a 1 dimensional measure while area is a 2 dimensional measure.
Think of your shoe.
You have a shoe size which is a measure of the length of your foot but your footprint includes not only the length but also the width. So your footprint would be a measure of area while the shoe size would be a measure of length.

An example of area is the size of a floor. eg, a # of square feet.
Height is how tall a person is.

Height is linear, or 1-dimensional.
Area is 2-dimensional, eg length and width.
