The width of a rectangular walkway is 12 ft less than half the length. Determine the dimensions of the walkway if the area is 1080 square ft2.
***
Let x=length of walkway
width=(x/2)-12
length*width=area
x((x/2)-12)=1080
x^2/2+12x=1080
x^2+24x=2160
x^2+24x-2160=0
(x+60)(x-36)=0
x=-60 (reject)
or
x=36
(x/2)-12=6
length of walkway=36 ft
width=(x/2)-12=6 ft
