A box has how many sides? Six. Think of it as a box that is 3' wide by 3' long, and 2' high.
Find the area of the six sides and add them together.
Sides 1-4: 3 feet wide/long by 2 feet high = 6 sq ft * 4 sides = 24 sf
Sides 5-6 (top and bottom): 3 feet by 3 feet = 9 sq ft * 2 sides = 18 sf
Total surface area = 24+18 = 42 sf
