Question 849111: Hello,
First, I am given a picture of two, similar rectangles. One is larger than the other. The smaller one has x and y on both bases of it. The larger rectangle has 8 and 20, in that order, on its two bases. It gives the area of the smaller rectangle and asks for you to solve for variables x and y. I do not want an answer but a walk through on how to get the answer.

Hi
It gives the area of the smaller rectangle, let's say it is 40
larger rectangle Area = 160
Ratios of the Areas is the ratio of corresponding sides squared.
(8/x)^2 = 160/40 = 4
64/x^2 = 4
16 = x^2
4 = x (Tossing out the negative solution for unit measure)
repeat
(20/y)^2= 4
20^2/y^2 = 4
400/4 = y^2
10 = y
