The formula for finding the surface area of a rectangular prism is never helpful. It is either totally without value for the vast majority of the time when you do not need to know the surface area of any rectangular prisms, or it is far in excess of helpful, in fact essential, for those times when you do need to calculate the surface area of a rectangular prism for which you are given, or are otherwise able to determine, the dimensions of the prism.
The above, of course, is the self-centered answer to the question. The more general world view is that said formula is very rarely ONLY helpful, rather it is very close to being continuously essential. With in excess of 7 Billion people in the world, the probability is high that at least one of them is calculating the surface area of a rectangular prism at any given moment.
