Answer by Theo(13342) (Show Source): You can put this solution on YOUR website!
cylinder is 8 feet high by 6 feet wide at the base.
this makes the diameter of the base equal to 6 feet.
this makes the radius of the base equal to 3 feet.
the formula for the surface are of a cylinder is equal to the lateral area of the cylinder plus 2 times the area of the base of the cylinder.
the base of the cylinder is a circle with a radius of 3 feet.
the area of the circle is equal to pi*r^2 which is equal to pi*3^2 which is equal to pi*9.
since you are using 3.14 as the measure for pi, this becomes:
area of the circle (one of the bases) is equal to 9*3.14 which is equal to 28.26 square feet.
since you have 2 bases, than the surface area of the bases of the cylinder is equal to 2 * 28.26 which is equal to 56.52 square feet.
the lateral area of the cylinder is equal to the height of the cylinder times the circumference of one of the bases.
the circumference of one of the bases is equal to 2*pi*r which is equal to 2*3.14*3 which is equal to 6*3.14 which is equal to 18.84 feet.
the lateral area is equal to 8 times 18.84 which is equal to 150.72 square feet.
the surface area of the cylinder is equal to the area of the 2 bases plus the lateral area which is equal to 56.52 + 150.72 = 207.24 square feet.
