A common mistake is to think that since 1 yard = 3 feet that 1 square yard = 3 square feet. But this is not true!

To understand the correct answer:
  • Draw a square.
  • Label the sides as 1 yard (in pencil so you can erase it). You now have a model of 1 square yard.
  • Erase the labels of 1 yard on each side and replace them with labels of 3 feet. You still have a model of 1 square yard but the sides are now labeled as 3 feet instead of 1 yard.
  • Finding the area of this square, using sides of 3 feet, we find that the area is 3%5E2 or 9 square feet.
So 1 square yard = 9 (not 3) square feet!

To find how many square yards are in 108 square feet we just divide by 9:
108/9 = 12
So 180 square feet = 12 square yards.
